i bought the philosophy makeup optional kit for like $25 when it was on hautelook. i’ve been using proactive for years and as i get older, i’ve noticed my skin getting drier and drier so i thought i would give it a try. i am kinda weird about my face wash as in..if it doesn’t have benzoyl peroxide and/or exfoliants, i don’t feel like my face is clean. the philosophy makeup optional kit came with purity facewash, hope in a jar moisturizer, hope in a tube eye & lip firming cream and when hope is not enough facial firming serum. i used the purity face wash for a couple weeks but after breaking out horribly (even on my neck-yuck!), i stopped using it. it was definitely moisturizing but the breakouts freaked me out. i did however continue using the facial firming serum and moisturizer. i really love how they both make my skin feel like satin. it almost leaves your skin looking like you have on a primer without feeling oily. the hope in a jar moisturizer has a really odd scent but i got used to it. i never really used the eye firming cream and i’m not quite sure why because i sure do need it. so i guess i will stick to proactive but i think i am going to continue with the hope in a jar moisturizer. do you have any favorite philosophy products i should try???

Fantastic blog by the way… great insight – I use proactive today and love philosophy (hope in a jar is fabulous and there is an eye cream that works well too). Thank you!!!

I bought that kit to about two years ago and I agree with you on all points. I am 24 and I still have breakouts (annoying right?! I thought when I was a teenager all I had to do was make it to 20 and it would magically stop but nooo! haha!) and I am the same as you about wanting “good stuff, strong stuff” in my face wash but I actually really liked the face wash it was a nice change. The lotion does smell super weird, I kept using it because it DID work really well, but I am really bugged by smell and I never did get used to it and went back to my traditional Oil of Olay. I am in LOVE with Philosophy’s Amazing Grace lotion and body wash, it smells so good and fresh and leaves a soft scent all day long, even into the next day, I got the “firming” lotion and it leaves your skin with this nice glow and gives the illusion of firmer skin, esp legs and arms. I ran out and it is on my Xmas list again this year 🙂

I haven’t tried these products, but I did notice that my (almost) 35 year old skin was starting to go through some changes lately. I was in the mood to update my makeup and the gal asked me about my skin care practices. When I informed her that I barely wash my face and only use moisturizer in the morning, she begged me to start using eye cream (bought Lancome’s and love it!) and a serum to remove dark spots (something new with age – ugh!). Now, I’m SUPER picky about the way things feel on my skin, but I’ve been so happy with these products that I’m glad I listened to a professional! She heard me when I said I didn’t want anything goopy or heavy and yet still found me something to push out the aging process. : ) Maybe these products aren’t the right ones for you…and if that’s the case, I’d highly recommend finding someone knowledgable about all kinds of products to point you in the right direction! : )

Jenn…you are too cute! you can certainly move in to my condo anytime 😉 and then go on a shopping spree on Michigan Ave! I have not used philosophy before, I am a die hard Clarins loyalist, but I would love to try out their shower gels! Smells heavenly!

my skin is super sensitive as well. i tried the purity cleanser and my face freaked out on me 🙁 i’m using murad now and it’s done what only prescription grade chemicals were able to do for me. AND it doesn’t completely dry out my face after every use.

love your blog btw! now following!

I’m a big fan of Philosophy but I totally agree with you about the cleanser, I breakout when I use it too. (I use Cetaphil instead.) However, I love the Hope in a Jar moisturizer! I would also recommend their retinol/night treatment called Help Me…its great for fine lines and controlling minor breakouts and I really see a noticable difference in my skin. And for a great everyday lip moisturizer, Kiss of Hope…the sleek black tube makes it look more like a fancy lipstick! 🙂
